I have so many fond memories of growing up in New England. One of my favorite seasons was always Fall, the beauty of the leaves changing, raking tons of leaves into giant piles and jumping into them! Whenever I go visit my beautiful family, I always collect some leaves that bring me back to those wonderful times. I created this table runner with those memories in mind!
At the end of this post you will find a delicious recipe for a Pumpkin & Chicken Chili, perfect for a cool fall evening!

This Leaf Table Runner measures Approximately 15" x 47"
~12 different Autumn print cotton fabrics for front of leaves each 10"x10" squares
~1 yard Autumn-themed cotton print fabric for back of leaves, cut into 12- 10"x 10" squares, or you can use 12 different fabrics 10x10"
~1 yard cotton batting cut into 12-10" squares
~Coordinated rayon thread for satin stitching and brown for stems
~Marking pencils, one for dark fabrics and one for light
~Sharp scissors for cutting out leaves
~Needle and thread for hand stitching leaves together
~Open toe foot for your machine is helpful

Almost ready to make quilt sandwiches!
Print out provided leaf templates, cut each leaf out along black line. You should have 4 leaf templates.
Take one of the Autumn colored squares, right side up and place #1 of the leaf templates diagonal on the square and with your marking pencil trace the leaf(don't be afraid to go to dark, the line will be covered by stitches). When you trace stem, only do one line, both side is not necessary, you will satin stitch straight down the single line.
Add in lines for veins
The darker the better so you can see them! The lines tend to fade (depending on what kind of marking pencil you use) a bit when sewing.
To make the sandwich, take one square of the back fabric
Turn right side down
Lay one square of batting on top of leaf back
Lay leaf printed side up(right side) on top of batting and the pin to secure.
Set up your sewing machine for a Satin or tight zigzag stitch, using rayon thread to compliment your leaf. Also I like to use an open toe foot for a clear view of what I am doing.
Center open toe foot so your traced line is right in the middle, and start stitching around outer edge of leaf.
Go all the way around leaf, including stem(I use a brown rayon thread for stem).
Then stitch the veins in the same way.

Using sharp scissors, cut out along outer edge of leaf.
Cut as close as you can get to the stitching, but don't cut it!
First leaf done, eleven more to go! Complete the rest in same manner, paying attention to the colors of the coordinated # leaves.
Make three leaves from each template for a total of 12 leaves.
This is the layout for the leaves, they touch at certain points, this is where they are attached. Refer to the print out at the end of the post for layout.
I use pins to mark the place where I will join the leaves together.
Take 2 leaves at a time, starting at top until you have 6 pairs sewn together.
From the back, where pin joins leaves together, whip stitch together so points are good and secure, knot off at each point.

First two leaves (Front) put aside laying out in correct order as you stitch together the remaining pairs.
First sets of two whip stitched together.
Add next pair of leaves and so on, until all six pairs are sewn together.
Autumn Leaves from the back, you can use either side!

Print Leaf and layout templates
Pumpkin & Chicken Chili
1 medium onion, chopped,
1 red bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
2 teaspoons oregano
1/4 cup flour
salt to taste
3 cups chicken broth
2 cans black beans, rinsed and drained
3 cups cooked, cubed chicken
1 can solid packed pumpkin-15 oz
1 can diced tomatoes-14.5 oz, undrained
1.In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil and add onion, red pepper, and garlic. Saute until softened.
2. Turn burner down to medium-low heat and stir in chili powder, cumin, oregano, flour, and salt. Stir together until all flour is mixed in.
3.Transfer to crock pot (5 quart is good).
4.Add chicken broth,beans, chicken, pumpkin, and tomatoes. Stir.
5.Cover and cook on low 4-5 hours.
Serve with corn bread or any bread for that matter and enjoy!
